The Murcian market garden or “huerta” has
contributed greatly to the cuisine of the region, which is marked
for its dishes which are simply prepared but delicious. The
local speciality is “caldero” – a mixture of
rice and fresh sea food. It takes it name from the pot in
which it is cooked. Tapas is popular in the region and most bars
and cafes will have a selection to choose from. When
you visit one of the local markets it is not difficult to see why
Murcian people eat well – the stalls are loaded with fresh
fruit and vegetables which look almost too good to eat.
The abundance of good restaurants and bars means it is easy to
eat out both affordably and well. It would be wrong not to mention
the wines of the region, from Jumilla, Yecla or Bullas. These
wines are both very affordable and very good – supermarkets
and off-licenses “bodegas” stock a wide selection to
tempt you.
