Fascinating evidence from Roman times have been
uncovered and are being carefully restored. You can visit
the Roman amphitheatre, which is being returned to working use,
and a museum which is centred on the ruins of a traditional Roman
dwelling.
The port area of Cartagena has been rejuvenated with restaurants
and café bars to sit at while you watch the boats, yachts
and now cruise ships which dock here. The main street, Calle
Mayor, starts from the beautifully restored old town hall and is
filled with old buildings, shops and restaurants.
On the hill which dominates the centre of the city you will find
the Castle of La Concepción, a Spanish fortification which
houses a lighthouse of Moorish origin, one of the few traces of
Moorish culture in Cartagena. From here you have fantastic
views over the city and out towards the surrounding countryside.
Cartagena has a programme of events especially designed for the
tourist, including a catamaran around the port, an open top tourist
bus and visits to a number of different museums and places of archaeological
importance. To find out the latest opening hours and prices,
visit the tourist information office by the port near the old town
hall.
